Please join us November 20 at 1:00 for a Zoom conversation with Councilmember Will Jawando about policing in Montgomery County. Since the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN, Breonna Taylor in Louisville, KY, and other such incidents, Jawando has grappled publicly with how jurisdictions like Montgomery County can prevent racial inequities in policing.
As many constituents have called for police reform and the County Office of Legislative Oversight produced a July report on Local Policing Data and Best Practices, Jawando has
called for reforms that ensure equal treatment for all citizens. He will share with WDC his priorities for using the best research data to invest in our community and prevent tragic outcomes in policing.
Born in Silver Spring to a Nigerian father and Kansan mother, Jawando resolved, after losing a friend to gun violence when he was a teenager, to a career in public service. While studying law at Catholic University, he founded a student NAACP chapter and, after graduating, worked with Democratic national leaders and then served as associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement under President Obama and as advisor to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Elected to the Montgomery County Council as an at-large member in 2018, he ran on a platform called MOCO Promise: a path to a safe, vibrant and inclusive community with great schools and a strong economy for all.
The program will be presented under the auspices of WDC’s Racial Equity in Public Safety Task Force.
