The language of that constitutional amendment as it appears on our Ballot is as follows:

The proposed amendment confirms an individual’s fundamental right to an individual’s own reproductive liberty and provides the State may not, directly or indirectly, deny, burden, or abridge the right unless justified by a compelling State interest achieved by the least restrictive means.”

There are only 35 days left before Election Day, 23 days before the start of early voting, and mail-in ballots are already out. In this final stretch, let’s make sure that we are doing everything we can to ensure victory for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. We must elect Angela Alsobrooks to the U.S. Senate, and elect April McClain Delaney to Congressional District 6.

The dedicated members of the WDC Advocacy Committee, assisted by our WDC grassroots advocacy community, partner organizations, and coalitions, worked tirelessly to advance a total of 44 bills and resolutions dealing with issues of importance to our club membership. Ultimately 21 of those 44 passed both chambers by Sine Die, the final day of session, and were enacted into law.

As we celebrate July 4th this year, there is much to consider. Our democracy is under attack, and the hard-won freedoms we cherish are facing unprecedented challenges. A significant blow to our civil liberties occurred on June 24, 2022, with the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs decision, which eliminated the constitutional right to abortion, overturned nearly 50 years of precedent, and cleared the path for states to implement abortion bans.

In Maryland, we are fortunate that our state has a longstanding record of protecting reproductive rights and is now poised to take another important step to solidify the right to reproductive freedom.
